A Vivoscene Music Review by Megan McClean
British producer bassDrumsnareDrum put down a few tracks, dressed them in chilled out baselines, embellished them with Betty Steeles’ dreamy vocals, sprayed them with a touch of techno and ended up with a brilliantly cohesive EP named Pause/Rewind. The London-based fella is no stranger to the music scene; in the past, he has mixed techno beats and played around with dub-step. However recently, he has been lured into the world of chilled-out, electronic music. bassDrumsnareDrum’s past experimenting with different genres of music bears influence on his debut EP. Together, the tracks emanate a soulful dance vibe but each one is distinctive and original in its sound and lyrical content.
The EP commences with the jaunty and brilliant one-liner ‘Honey,’ whose bass immediately launches you into bassDrumsnareDrum’s domain. The jubilant tempo compels you to jiggle your shoulders and essentially entices you in, ensuring the remaining tracks get a listen. Subsiding into a slightly more reflective and loungey number, ‘Human,’ bassDrumsnareDrum corrals his steady techno flair with Steeles’ infectiously delicate vocals as she croons about trying to be a perfect human. He ends up with a relatively upbeat song that takes you on a journey of twists and turns, from a peppy pulse to a softened and downcast beat, revealing the EP’s darker undertones. Continuing with a similarly pensive tune, ‘I Can’t Keep Falling,’ shows off Steeles’ soulful range. Resembling the soft and sincere vocals of Macy Gray, this talented and upcoming singer/songwriter is showcased by bassDrumsnareDrum’s beats, just as she, in turn, enhances his skills in the studio.
The EP concludes with the title-track, ‘Pause/Rewind.’ bassDrumsnareDrum’s tuneful riffs, tinged with a dub-influenced streak, together with Steeles’ soothing voice, provide for a dazzling blend that sews up the record. This down-tempo song picks you up, drops you on the sofa and takes you to a happy place where all you hear is Steeles asking “if you can see, if you believe.”
That’s not all. bassDrumsnareDrum has another neatly wrapped gift for anyone willing to lend an ear to his music. To mark the EP’s release, he is offering a free download of a bonus track named ‘All I Need,’ a song that fantastically juxtaposes his bass and her vocals to reveal a truly tip-top duo.
It’s bloody good fun and a record you’ll be replaying on rainy Sundays. Pause/Rewind will be released August 6th.
